Barretts History

Barretts Equine Limited was founded in 1989 by Fred N. Sahadi, Barretts’ President Jerry McMahon, and the late Fairplex CEO Ralph M. Hinds. Located on the grounds of Fairplex in Pomona, California, Barretts is now owned and operated by the Los Angeles County Fair Association, a 501(c)5 mutual benefit corporation.

Established to provide the breeding and racing industry in California with a permanent sales facility and full-service sales company, Barretts conducted its inaugural sale in March of 1990.

Four auctions are now held annually. They include sales of 2-year-olds in training, horses of racing age, yearlings and breeding stock. The first million dollar 2-year-old in training, Unbridled’s Song sold for $1.4 million at Barretts’ March Sale in 1995. The highest-priced California-bred of all-time, Unbridled Slew sold for $2.5 million at Barretts in 2006 during the May Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training.

Barretts’ auctions have produced more than 150 graded stakes winners worldwide, including Eclipse and Breeders’ Cup champions.

In 2015 Barretts moved its offices to Arcadia, California with sales being held at the Del Mar Race Track in Del Mar, California.
